20 months ago my step father Steve had a mountaineering accident, which left him paralysed and in need of major rehabilitation. Six months ago he learnt with my help to ride a bike, let alone walk or talk. Helping him transfer his passion for barren harsh environments and technical climbing / mountaineering to cycling, through said harshness, has been both a privilege and an amazing story of fortitude and courage..... it does help him being belligerent as hell, but quite simply put all who meet him and hear the story and then see us cycle off are amazed.. This is the first part of, what little I managed to film of our trip, as we went around we got the photographic gear out and did our best to record the landscape as well. hopefully the subsequent films will give you a taste of the islands, our trip and our work. Everything has been shot with my N95 phone both on and off the bike...8gb is enough for a trip apparently..

Tree Stencil Cut and Spray Timelapse - Draft from Jaymis on Vimeo.

This is a timelapse shot over several months totalling about 10 hours cutting and then spraying a stencil. It still needs some tweaks to editing and motion, but it takes an extremely long time to render, and there are loads of other projects in the way, so I'd prefer to share it incomplete and warty rather than never showing it because it's not "perfect". Tech: Shot with a Pentax *ist DS Digital SLR. The frames were taken as quickly as the camera could record to SD card - about 1 frame every 1.7 seconds. The camera was immobile on a tripod, the pan and scan (or "Ken Burns Effect" if you want to be all photo nerd) was added later in After Effects. I shot medium-resolution images, which gave me 1500x1000ish pixels, allowing quite a bit of resizing and moving around the frame. The faster, motion-blurred action as the video progresses is also post-production, created by speeding up the clips and blending multiple frames together. HV20 - all default settings - no changes in post production except scene fades. Edit: Seems my audio was offset some how. It cut off at the end. Also seems to be a bit laggy. I was the DP/Editor/Colorist/Foley-ADR Engineer on this micro-horror film. Shot in HD 1080. We built the set in 3 days, shot for another 3 days, and sleeplessly edited the thing for another 3. I've been friends with Myles (director) for almost 21 years now, and despite having common interests in film and production aesthetics we've never really worked on a project together. this video is based on the brian eno/harold budd piano composition of the same name. the song in relation to its title made me think of that space of time between when you first try to think of something and when you actually remember it. this video illustrates that lack of clarity. someone's face...someone's name...that one moment...it's not quite remembered yet. this piece was made in May of this year, but after an unfortunate series of events i found myself with neither a hard copy of the video nor the final cut pro file. so i went back to the original DV tape and i am re-editing it; partially from memory but also with a fresh perspective. i don't have time to finish editing it now, but i will finish as soon as classes are out for the winter break.

Filmed with the Canon HV20 at the Robert Marshall Wildlife Preserve in the Florida Everglades. Casual filming, no tripod, etc. I nicknamed this alligator "Bubbles" because he was eating minnows and blowing bubbles (helps them submerge). I don't talk in the video the voices you hear are a couple from out of state, they were about 10 feet behind me but after they left it was just me and the alligator. Turn up your speakers at around 2:05 and you can hear a slight "growl". Keep in mind I grew up near the Everglades and have spent a lot of time near wildlife, I don't recommend getting as close as I did. Enjoy!

Even a 2 1/2 foot baby alligator can have a bad day. This poor little guy's day went from bad to worse. I was filming some shots for "Alligator Creek" that day when I saw a baby alligator near the back of a car. He wanted it all to himself and chased away anyone who got near....including me. The guy talking in the video is the owner of the car. After the car was gone the alligator decided to have a snack (don't know what it was). He found out the hard way that a nest full of fire ants isn't willing to share..........you can see the ants crawling on him. The thumbnail above is a digital photo I took of him with the HV20 and does not appear in the video. It was shot later that day after the rain stopped. I'm unable to edit at the moment because my LCD screen is cracked :( so this is raw unedited footage. Enjoy! Filmed with the Canon HV20. Mark
