In the last post on adding light I was talking about using light ethically in the hard news environment. One of the things I said was when I add light while covering news I try to use the same angles as the existing light. In other words, I am trying to honestly show the readers what was there and still create an image that can be reproduced well on a printing press. Yesterday, Governor Bob Riley was in town to give a press conference on the new robotics center that will locate at Calhoun Community College just outside Decatur.
I brought in two light stands, strobes and pocket wizards. The room the press conference was in has a high ceiling, and I mean thirty plus feet high, and is painted black. The room has the odd combination of filtered daylight which is somewhat blue, incandescent spots all along the wall about fifteen feet up and some variety of sodium vapor lights in the ceiling. As you can image, this creates an interesting variety of light. This makes my decision to strobe pretty easy. Lighting angles were not a problem since light was coming from so many directions so I set one light stand at about 45 degrees to the podium left and another about twenty degrees to the podium right. Both strobes were a good fifty feet from the podium. I set the strobes on 1/4 power and my ISO on 800. The color balance worked best on Auto or on incandescent.
In a press conference you don’t usually have to worry too much about being unethical with the light. TV people usually bring lights and the assortment of still photographers will be shooting flash too. In the conference yesterday there were at least five still photographers and all of them were using on camera strobes except me. Most of them were using some form of bounce. The TV guys just used room light. The reason I am talking about ethical use of strobes in the news environment is because it is really easy to get to fancy with lights. Since I found STROBIST I could easily be tempted to do something “extra” with the lights.
In many situations you simply have to add light. It is unavoidable. An on camera strobe is not more ethical than an off camera one. The main thing you are looking for is to document honestly what you are shooting. That means using light and all your other photographic tools ethically.
For instance, if I added a background light or put a gel on a strobe to do something other than color balance I have effectively changed what I am photographing. Then I am going to be presenting a picture that I created rather than a picture that I recorded. That’s okay in some environments but not in a documentary environment. Now this photo of the Governor during a campaign stop is a nice image but this lighting just didn’t exist. In all honesty, I wasn’t thinking about lighting ethics when I shot this photo. It was dusk, there was virtually no available light to work with and I hate on camera strobes. I had my son stretch an SC17 off camera shoe cord around behind some folks and aim the flash directly at the governor while I framed using several other people. Now, no one is going to jail over this photo but it is not really and accurate representation of what I saw. No reader standing beside me would have seen this light because it simply did not exist. I created it.
Like I said, it is not the end of the world but there is one thing my dad taught me a long time ago about life. He said, if you will give in to the small temptations now it will be much easier to give in to the bigger ones later on. Lesson being, if you are honest in the use of light it will be far easier to be honest in your use of your other tools such as Photoshop and we have seen quite a few people get in trouble there.

Dr. Dre’s Detox could be considered the rap equivalent of Guns n’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy. Both albums are long in the making, oft-delayed and sometimes seem entirely fictional. But as we discovered that Chinese Democracy is close to becoming a reality thanks to those leaked tracks, Snoop Dogg confirmed today that Detox is on its way as well. “That record is real, it’s coming,” Snoop Dogg said, having recently recorded tracks for Dre’s album. “I was starting to doubt it myself and then I went up in there and he played so much music for me it knocked my head off.” Snoop also adds the album is finished, and now it’s up to Dre to go through all the songs he’s culled and decide which make the final cut. “I see what he got them waiting for, it’s on and poppin’,” the Doggfather said. Snoop also revealed that Dre will produce his next record, the follow-up to Ego Trippin’.

We've seen more silly homemade electric vehicles than we care to remember, but Ben Nelson's electric motorcycle manages to retain some of its original two-wheel charm while using only a penny of juice per mile -- roughly the equivalent of 300mpg. Nelson bought the bike for $100 and swapped out the original engine for a Briggs and Stratton 8HP DC motor he picked up on eBay for $500, using four $160 Optima Yellowtop lead-acid batteries for power. Nelson says he can get the rig up to a top speed of 45MPH, and he's got a range of about 20 miles before he needs to plug in -- enough to run errands around town. Best of all, the state of Wisconsin willingly registered his bike as a "hobbyist" vehicle, which means he's free to (silently) roam the streets at will. Ben first built the bike about a year ago, so he's accumulated a ton of useful info if you're interested in following in his tire tracks -- hit up the read link to learn more, and check the video after the break.Read - Nelson's build blog[Via ecomodder]Continue reading Modded electric motorcycle is street-legal, costs under $2KPermalink | Email this | Comments

And Now, a Few Words From the Tourist Standing Next to You
Off-camera flash as High Art: Julius von Bismark, an artist in Berlin, is playing with snap-happy tourists by injecting words into their photos. He cut a hole in the back of an old film camera and stuck a slaved flash into it. By writing words onto transparent plastic and sliding the sheet into a slot near the film plane, the whole rig now works backwards and becomes a projector. By leaving the shutter open and slaving the rear flash, he can now project those words onto the subject of someone else's photo when their flash trips his flash. His slave setup is a little clunky (kinda Steam Punk-ish, actually). But a standalone SB-800 also would work great -- without the camera-topping project box slave. He's in it for the social commentary, but I can't help thinking how much fun this would be for sophomoric jokes, too. You know, if you were that kind of person...(Thanks to everyone who sent this in -- www.JuliusvonBismark.com, via Gizmodo.)-30-Special notice for Email/RSS subscribers: The second printing of the Strobist DVD Set is back in stock and shipping. Hahaha, Consequence kills me with his frenetic ConsTV vids. (hold your hand steady!) I love the fact that he caught this great moment from the Glow in the Dark tourstop when Chris Brown came onstage at Madison Sq.Garden for the first time ever and performed “Cinderella/Umbrella” with his boo boo.
Now the reality is….he coulda come out every night. Because…um…I hear he was tagging along for most of the whole tour, playing bball backstage while Rihanna was busy, lol. (cute)
And you get all the insight and fun commentary from Cons’ VIP peanut gallery: Talib Kweli, GLC, Kanye’s manager Don C, and Cons himself.
Favorite part is when Don does his interpretation of Chris Brown’s cameo:

Offshore wind power park to energize Delaware homes
Filed under: Misc. Gadgets
[more] Filed under: Misc. Gadgets
Unlike Rock Port, Missouri, the entire state of Delaware won't be 100-percent wind-powered after Bluewater Wind constructs a $1.6 billion wind park just off its shore, but the state will be able to "light about 50,000 homes a year" for the duration of the 25-year contract. Said agreement was just nailed down between the aforesaid firm and Delmarva Power, and it hopes to start powering homes via wind by 2012. The offshore site will sit around 12 miles off Rehoboth Beach, with a number of turbines to be planted 90-feet into the sea floor and sport three blades apiece measuring 150-feet long. It's noted that vacationers and locals alike won't be able to notice the park from the beach except on a few remarkably clear days, but if their energy bills sink because of it, we don't really think they'll mind, anyway.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

A nursing home in Germany built an exact replica of a bus stop in front of the facility. The only difference is that buses never stop there.
“It sounds funny,” said Old Lions Chairman Franz-Josef Goebel, “but it helps. Our members are 84 years-old on average. Their short-term memory hardly works at all, but the long-term memory is still active. They know the green and yellow bus sign and remember that waiting there means they will go home.” The result is that errant patients now wait for their trip home at the bus stop, before quickly forgetting why they were there in the first place.
“We will approach them and say that the bus is coming later today and invite them in to the home for a coffee,” said Mr Neureither. “Five minutes later they have completely forgotten they wanted to leave.”

Get Yourself on iTunes?
TuneCore Finds A Way To Contribute To The Cesspool of Mediocrity: Tunecore claims it can get unsigned artists on digital... [more]
TuneCore Finds A Way To Contribute To The Cesspool of Mediocrity: Tunecore claims it can get unsigned artists on digital stores including iTunes, eMusic, Amazon, and Rhapsody, for roughly $30 an album.
“Twenty years ago, an artist with an acoustic guitar and a four-track demo would need to find a label to get her album on the shelves at Tower Records. Getting that contract was a long and painful process for the few who could navigate it; for most, it never led to anything, and that four-track demo was heard only by friends, family, and patrons of the local coffee shop”.
(Ars Technica)
Jeff Price who heads TuneCore tells Ars Technica that “the music industry changed” on the day that TuneCore went live. Any person on the planet “can have access to worldwide distribution; there are no filters,” he says, and he says it with energy.
Ladies and Gentlemen, allow us to re-write the story. Twenty years ago, an artist with an acoustic guitar and a four track demo couldn’t get the album on the shelves at Tower Records because in MOST cases, it wouldn’t deserve such a prime placement. It wasn’t a distribution problem, it was called mediocre product problem.
Distribution won’t increase your popularity and certainly won’t increase sales especially if you’re an unknown artist. Jeff Price sees a marketing opportunity what he calls ‘worldwide unfiltered distribution’. Price is contributing to the cesspool of garbage and certainly doesn’t seem to care about the consumer or the music. Filling iTunes with unfiltered music is comparable to dumping raw sewage in our seas. We don’t need more music, we need better music.
If you’re a serious passionate artist looking to build a fan base and hoping to bring your music to the masses, then getting your songs on iTunes is not the solution. The solution is writing great songs and finding a producer that will attack the songs, making them even better. The next step is to play live and putting on a killer live show. Sell your CD’s at a live show for 5 bucks and you were certainly make a return on your investment. If your worthy and fans want more of you, then consider a line of merchandise including t-shirts. When you begin to feel the buzz and you’re getting hundreds upon hundreds of legit emails requesting music, then consider iTunes; or sell your songs on your website establishing a direct relationship with the fans.
If you’re that person with an acoustic guitar and a four-track demo wanting worldwide distribution, consider yourself a dreamer, certainly not an artist.
We want to hear new music. Send us great songs and make our day. Email tips@kingsofar.com with link to your myspace and let us know what song we should be listening to.
