This is an edit of the setting-up & opening of the launch night of my crazy label-produced vinyl toy 'Droplet' which was held @ Go Go Plastic in The Custard Factory, Birmingham on Friday May 2nd 2008! The launch featured a world-first shipment of 128 Droplets which came in hand-numbered boxes and had a extra special glossy coating. Over half the entire shipment sold on the night, with the remaining lot selling out a few days over - I'm over the moon with the reception to the lil' fellas! The night also showcased over 40 customized Droplets from artist friends of mine, who pulled out all the stops to give the toys a brand new look! I found this little clip on my external harddrive this weekend, buried in a folder I was about to throw into the trash. I'm glad I didn't hit delete. This clip was the last road trip with one of my best pals, Reed Corbin who passed away in November. We had flown to Las Vegas to pick up the pornmobile from the boss, then drove it back to Oklahoma in less than 12 hours. Along the way we had all sorts of conversations. I edited all of it over a year ago and chunked the master movie file, otherwise I would go back and add more video of our conversations we had taped on our way back from Vegas. Keep your friends close.

A year-long project by Sidney Lo sponsored by Self Edge and Superfuture® More information and photographs can be found at http://sidneylophoto.com --- An excerpt from my exhibition: ”From 1980 to 1981, performing artist Teching Hsieh punched a time clock every hour on the hour, twenty-four hours a day, for an entire year, to observe the passage of time. My series, entitled What Are You Wearing Today?, is an exercise in time and digital replication. I photographed myself everyday for an entire year, from March 10th, 2007 until March 10th, 2008. Like Teching Hsieh’s Time Piece, I illustrated the passage of time by shaving my head and letting it grow throughout the duration of my work. This subject of transience can also be observed by my jeans, which I have worn every single day to coincide with my growing hair. Both elements signify change and growth that conformed to my body throughout this year-long piece. This series examines the digital era and how we interact with others in the 21st Century. Popular examples of this self-documentation can be seen with photographer Noah Kalina’s video, Everyday, that garnered over eight million views on YouTube and his six year self-portrait video has even been subject to parody in the animated series, The Simpsons. Now, more than ever, digital imagery has become a readily accessible tool for communicating and sharing ideas. What Are You Wearing Today? derives from Superfuture, an online resource for global travelers and shoppers. Alongside an appreciation for Japanese-made artisan reproductions of American jeans, W.A.Y.W.T., a clothing thread within Superfuture’s message board, spans thousands of pages containing photographs documenting what Superfuture’s users are wearing. While creating this work, I actively participated in this daily ritual and even went so far as to meet other users in real life around New York City, Boston, and San Francisco. Since merging online posting with real-life interaction, this work imbues the natural process of evolution in communities such as Superfuture in ways that reflect on the direction of our emerging technologies and grapple with the delicate balance between analog and digital resources in our daily lives.”

A distortion is the alteration of the original shape (or other characteristic) of an object, image, sound, waveform or other form of information or representation. Distortion is usually unwanted. In some fields, distortion is desirable, such as electric guitar (where distortion is often induced purposely with the amplifier to achieve the electric guitar's desired, electrifying, aggressive sound). The slight distortion of analog tapes and vacuum tubes is considered pleasing in certain situations. The addition of noise or other extraneous signals (hum, interference) is not considered to be distortion, though the effects of distortion are sometimes considered noise.

This animation was a part of gallery show called "Interior Landscapes" at the Lab in San Francisco. The show incorporated painting, fabric sculpture and installation, along with this animation. The imagery in this work is inspired by botany, internal organs, and the idea of worlds within worlds. A loose narrative springs from the confusion of scale; the idea of life existing within seeds, creating landscapes at levels so large or small that they are beyond our grasp. With every change in magnification, it seems like a new world is born. The animation is a collaboration with Mark Edwards, Jeff Ray and Jim Coursey. I developed it in connection with the music, and we took several passes back and forth to find a balance between the two.
