Heading home for Christmas, a 40 car pile-up on the main interstate closed that route, so I was stuck going 15 - 20 miles per hour (because of a dumbass in front of me that apparently couldn't tell that the pavement was dry) for 60 or so miles on a back road. At least the blowing snow was kind of pretty.

Brian McClendon (the creator of Google Earth) demonstrates how people have used Google Earth to visualize data. In this case, he's showing how one researcher has plotted the spread of the h5n1 flu virus the past few years. He was part of a panel discussion entitled "World Hot Spots: What Google Earth and Geography Tell Us About War, Peace, and Politics" that took place at the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas. It was an informative and illuminating discussion. The gist is that we've had some alarmingly ignorant leaders over the past 50 years who do not know much about the geography and geopolitics of the areas they've gotten us involved in and there has been a serious decline (due to the elimination in many schools of the subject) in geography education in the US over the years. http://doleinstitute.org http://doleinstitute.org/video/index.html

Our favorite from this year's Wakarusa Festival was That 1 Guy. He built his own instrument out of metal pipes, a couple of strings, and some triggers. At one point during his performance, he even played his shoe (I may have some footage of that). After each race, the teams tear down and rebuild the engines of the cars. You definitely want to be upwind of these things when they test them. Since the cars burn alcohol and other pretty nasty stuff, the exhaust is mean. My dad invited me to go to the drag races with him. It was amazing how fast some of these go and how loud they are. As the cars pass you, the sound is so loud that you feel a pretty substantial compression wave. Neil Hamburger (along with Pleaseeasaur) performed at the Jackpot Saloon last night here in Lawrence. Both were friggin' hilarious. Neil was fantastic. Among show highlights were his throwing of a drink in the face of a particularly annoying heckler as well as in the face of a red-headed hottie who threw a handful of change at him (others had been throwing individual coins). He did approximately 19 encores. Michael "heckuvajobbrownie" Brown spoke at the Dole Institute at the University of Kansas the other night about his experience with FEMA and hurricane Katrina. I figured it might be interesting to hear his perspective. It definitely was interesting. He was highly critical of most of what happened above the level of the "first responders" and was particularly critical of the mayor (Nagin), governor (Blanco), head of DHS (Chertoff), and the shrub (Bush). Unfortunately, a lot of what he had to say confirmed my generally negative impression of our legislative and executive branches of government at the state and federal level which basically comes down to "you're doomed if you expect government to help you or be on your side". There were several "outraged" types during the Q&A session which provided the entertainment portion of the evening, so it ended up being fun to have attended. http://www.doleinstitute.org/

It was even better seeing them in the intimate setting of The Bottleneck as opposed to when I last saw them at Wakarusa. I feel a special kinship with the group since I got ordained over the internet a few years back, so that I could perform my friends' wedding ceremony (I can also absolve sins, so if anyone needs a hook-up, let me know). I had a couple of kites that I hadn't used, so I figured I'd go over to Loatsberry Farm II: Electric Boogaloo and give them a whorl (see previous Squiddy clip). I had better luck flying the dragon kite than I did flying Squiddy. However, I did manage to get the dragon kite stuck in the trees three times and also managed to somehow get it wrapped around a toy tractor (see picture). I'm pretty sure the neighbor horses were silently snickering at me.

Poor Squiddy doesn't fly too well. His tail just isn't long enough. The horses next door were fascinated by our attempts to get Squiddy flying and would come and stand by their fence and watch. Eventually, Bill decided to tie a rope to Squiddy. That helped a bit, but he still more hovered than flew. Poor Squiddy. This probably could have used some heart-rending music, but oh well.

Frozen Noises

The frozen lake makes some interesting noises. About midway through, there was even a nice cracking noise (~:45). These sounds remind me a bit of the noises that hatchling alligators make. When I was taking pictures earlier, there was an amazing cracking/rending sound that reverberated all over the places for several seconds. I took it to be the ice shifting or settling or something. It was incredible.

My niece, Brooke, got Moon Shoes for Xmas. This reminded me of the scene in The Holy Grail where you see the guy coming from far off, but it never seems like he's getting closer and then suddenly he's there hacking off limbs. I was amazed at how loud they were from a distance. No limbs were lost in the filming of this clip.

My friends Bill and Julie Loats put on their fifth annual fall gathering (Loatstober Fest) last weekend. Good beer, good people, good food, good music. Their friends "Prairie Acre" provided some excellent bluegrass entertainment. http://www.theprairieacre.com When the band started, everyone cozied-up to the bonfire and chatted with new and old friends. There were a ton of kids there (seems like everyone is squirting them out these days). Some kept themselves entertained by throwing grass into the fire, stomping out errant flames, roasting marshmallows on huge roasting poles, and other general mayhem. At one point, Joe (Bill and Julie's middle child) discovered that after spending quite a while stomping on fires and kicking the bonfire that his shoes were more than comfortably warm and needed to be removed. This is a clip around the bonfire during one of the tunes.
