David T. commented on tags not being used by search engine

Sorry, this is so freakin' obvious but I've searched around for an answer to no avail. I THOUGHT if I tagged a video, a random user coming to vimeo.com and using the search box is searching for that tag. I've told a couple people to find my videos by just going to vimeo and searching for [uncommon keyword] in the search box. However, I searched for my tags and cannot find them! I do see them when I use the "tag explorer" functionality. Excuse me, but what's the point of the search engine if it ignores the tags?

The high def. channel is pretty "high prestige" - good luck getting your video added there!

Thanks very much for the comments. I agree with you that shaky camera work is good for some kind of narratives. I was a big fan back in the day of The Blair Witch Project. I think like any "special" effect though, it's something people really need to think twice about using, or maybe just think twice about using it too often. Take Requiem for Dream, which I thought was awesome. It had those really innovative cutting sequences, but if the entire film had been edited that way, it would have been ridiculous.

The scene that caused problems was where someone walks across the frame with the picket fence in the foreground. The edges of the fence kept tearing and wobbling, almost like you'd see in an old analog video when the tracking was off. This happened even when I set it to recognize that I have a CMOS shutter. So I don't know why it didn't like that...it has a lot of settings and honestly I don't fully understand what all of them do, but it's pretty powerful.

It does eat up resolution, because it's zooming to some degree. On the Annapolis video, I actually went back and reprocessed the 1440X1080 video so that I'd lose the least amt. of detail. For this one I didn't care and just passed the whole finished product (1280X720) through it, except for the 1 scene that caused problems. For vimeo I have been converting everything to 1280X720 and then editing, versus converting the final edit, because even though I have a pretty recent machine it is still faster to edit at the lower resolution.

3d60, I agree, in an ideal world a tripod is better. The Gunnar Thalin filter takes a bit of tweaking to get it looking natural, there must be something better (but much more expensive) in the commercial world. On the videos where I've used deshaker the net result was a huge improvement over the non-processed edit. There is a slight moment of flutter in one scene, but I just tell myself that it's gate weave LOL.

I think 3d60's comments are good ones. Especially regarding the aesthetics of hand held. Whenever this comes up I can't help but think of Stephanie Zacharek's classic review of Dancer in the Dark for Salon. There's an inherent disingenuousnes s to "Dogma 95" style conventions: of course, because our brains steady our vision and focus our scenes, how we really experience the world is not out of focus with a shaky camera. Unless one is on mind-altering substances, perhaps.

It would be interesting to see this passed through Gunnar Thalin's deshaker. (or surely Avid can do something similar or better?)

Wow. I wish I took things seriously enough to buy a Letus, but I don't! This "video" looks very filmic. I love the track, but I don't get an impression of it really relating to subject matter of the scenes. Nice job though.

Cool, I like the look of the video. On what kind of telecine was the super8 transferred?

Love it! Now you just need the Michael Nyman Band somewhere in the meadow playing 'Chasing Sheep Is Best Left To Shepherds'
