I imagine that controlling a curve with software is much more difficult than a straight line - i've use a lot of music programs and the one that make knobs 'turn realistically' with the mouse in a circle suck some ass. the ones that just use up/down or left/right gestures win out every time. That may be a function of crappy mouse input however, so I guess it depends on how quick the tracking software is and how well users adapt to phantom curves on the screen :)
