The Christmas season is fast-approaching in Honduras and that can only mean one thing--fireworks! Henry, Brendan and I went out and bought some from one of the roadside shacks (a new one pops up everyday, it seems) and loaded up on ammunition. We launched the bottle rockets at night, so, no footage for you. See if you can figure out if Brendan likes fireworks or not...

Some footage from the PADI Open Water course we took with Utila Dive Center. Utila (in the Bay Islands) is the cheapest place in the world to get your SCUBA certification. It's also located on part of the second largest reef in the world. Scuba diving is fun, and the Utila Dive Center is highly recommended.

This video is NOT by me. It is a rip of a DVD shot and produced by Jessica Cirkus (Sea Cirkus Creations), who joined us on a couple of dives and made us look not-at-all clumsy. Thanks!

We arranged to be taken out on the lake in a rowboat for a 4 hour tour. Instead it was maybe 2 hours, most of which was spent rowing up and down the canal that leads to the lake. Not exactly exciting.

I wasn't too disappointed, though. Mainly because it was really hazy, so you couldn't see very far anyway. Also because a 13 year old boy was doing the rowing. With 3 adults in the boat. Not easy. I didn't want the kid to kill himself for what amounted to 12 or 13 bucks. (Although in the end we weren't charged anything because he took us back too soon.)

We went hiking in Parque Nacional Montaña de Santa Bárbara with a guide we met named Marcos. The Parque is the second highest peak in Honduras, but unfortunately we didn't have enough time to go all the way to the top and back. Guess we'll just have to visit again!

Here in the video we're taking in the view of Lago Yojoa below. There is also a view of Marcos' village, San José de los Andes. Getting to the village without a vehicle (which most people don't have) requires walking uphill for about an hour. Only then can you "start" the hike.

We took a tuk-tuk (say that 3 times fast!) to the village of La Pintada, "just outside" Copán. The village sustains itself thanks to a local textiles co-op. Anyway, I say "just outside" even though it took 20 minutes up into the mountains, on what some people might call a road. I'm amazed the tuk-tuk made it. This is a clip of our trip downhill, with my parents hot on our trail.

About a kilometre east of the town of Copán Ruinas, in the woods along the Río Copán, you'll find the ruins of Copán. Copán was a major cultural centre of the Mayan civilization from the 5th to the 9th century AD.

When you first enter the ruins, you see the Great Plaza. In an area at least as big as a soccer field, and perfectly groomed, are some terraces and many delicately carved stone monuments, called stelae. Most of these stelae are not the originals, which have been relocated to protect them from the elements. Even though they're reproductions, the effect of these 2-3 metre high works of stone is no less impressive.

Protected under a massive green tarp, next to the Ball Court, is the Hieroglyphic Stairway. It is the longest known hieroglyphic inscription in the Americas, containing 72 steps and 2,500 glyphs, telling the early history of Copán's rulers. In the 1940's archaeologists assembled the stairs, then a in disrepair, in random order. Now scientists are attempting recreate the Stairway in the proper order. Good luck, guys.

The West Court is where you can find Altar Q, a stone altar featuring carvings of all 16 rulers of the Copán dynasty. In the East Court, Copan's original plaza, you'll find a short tunnel leading underground to Rosalila Temple, discovered in 1989 and the best-preserved Mayan temple ever found. An impressive reporduction (painted in its original colours) can be seen in the on-site museum.

The iguana farm on Roatán (Bay Islands, Honduras) is worth a quick visit. Bring some bananas and you can feed some of the over 4,000 iguanas there. All those claws and tails scraping along the ground make an awful racket. If you don't like lizards, you can skip this tourist attraction.

These girls are competing for the title of Reina de la Feria. The winner of this pageant holds the title for the year and represents Juticalpa at a festival happening in a few weeks. Each girl represents one of the barrios (neighbourhoods) in town, and competition is fierce.

Everybody in the crowd has a particular favourite, and most people had signs and banners to show their support. White banners were for Melissa, who represented Colonia Las Acacias (our 'hood, yo!) and was pretty good-lookin'. She came in second.

At most public events, there always seems to be some sort of dance routine by girls in tight jeans, skimpy tops and cowboy hats (this is Olancho, after all).

The "sportswear" segment was particularly strange. Half of the girls came out in tennis outfits which is odd because, as our friend Henry muttered, "There's no place in Juticalpa to play tennis!"

This video is an extremely condensed version of the night's events. When you count all the concert performances and wardrobe changes, the pageant in its entirety took over three and a half hours! So, shorter than your average parade. Not a bad deal. You also don't get to hear any of the dozens of times Angel exclaimed, "This is wrong. This is so wrong! These girls need real hobbies!" (Feminism has a way to go, I guess.)
