Not sure if my interpretation of the ending is correct but I believe the scene with the girl waking up and talking to the boy (presumably her brother) is supposed to imply that the previous events were a dream. Then, as you begin to think she is not actually alone, the system that is driving the virtual environment crashes and you come back to the realization that she is alone. The family, dogs, etc. were actually just another interaction with technology.
