  How so? There is nothing to get in the way. Have you looked at viddler's technique? The only disruptive part might be the little pop-up balloons that appear as the timeline progresses, but they only appear if the user has purposely enabled them. Viddler's method could be extended by Vimeo to be like Facebook's person tagging, or Flickr's photo notes, where boxes appear on screen to show where a tag applies. Of course, they wouldn't be enabled by default unless the viewer explicitly clicks the "show popups" toggle in the player.

  When I watch a regular video, it might be a few minutes into it before I notice that I have HD off. When I enable it, Vimeo inevitably starts the video over from the beginning, but in HD, so I gotta wait a while for it to load up to that point. It'd be pretty cool if Vimeo could just start loading the HD from that position, so there is hardly much of a delay between switching.
